Way back when I was a resident, this older man came in because he could not hear. Not unusual in someone who was probably in his 70’s. But on exam he had these huge wax impactions. Within a few moments I dug them out and he could hear quite well. Before the procedure he could barely make out what I was saying, afterwards we could converse easily in normal tones.

“How long has it been like this?” I asked.

“About a month.” He replied.

I was surprised at the response. I knew that the doctor I was working with saw patients promptly, perhaps the same day. “Why did you wait so long?” I queried.

Without any guile or attempt at humor he answered, “because I did not want to hear my wife.”
