Story without comment

Yesterday I found out that one of my patients did something very bad. He has emphysema and like many is unable to quit smoking despite being on Oxygen. I get that, the stress is very hard and it feels like it is too late anyway. What he did that was memorable is try to light a cigarette without first turning the oxygen off.  He burned his face, the interior of this nose and larynx and had possible smoke inhalation.

I found this out well after the event, after he had been discharged from the burn center. It was when he needed an order for Home Care, which of course he needed.

Normally people turn off the oxygen to take a smoke. I can easily she how easy it is to forget that one step, with the obvious tragic consequences.
